Electrical Work Limitations

Important information about the scope of services we provide and Colorado electrical licensing requirements.

High Plains Home Tech is a low-voltage cabling and audio/video installation company. We are licensed and insured to perform low-voltage wiring and related technology services.

We are not licensed as electricians and therefore do not perform any services that involve 120-volt or higher electrical systems.

To comply with the Colorado Electrical Board and the National Electrical Code (NEC), High Plains Home Tech cannot perform any task that involves the installation, alteration, or repair of electrical wiring used for light, heat, or power.

Services We ARE Legally Allowed to Perform

High Plains Home Tech may perform the following low-voltage (Class 2/3) and technology services:

  • Ethernet (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A) cabling
  • Coaxial cabling (RG6, RG59)
  • Audio/video wiring and TV mounting
  • Security camera (PoE or low-voltage) wiring
  • Smart home device installation (low-voltage only)
  • Home theater cabling
  • Network equipment installation
  • Cable management and cleanup
  • In-wall low-voltage pass-through plates
  • Structured cabling for residential and small commercial clients

These services do not involve modifying electrical power wiring.

Services We CANNOT Perform (Electrical Work)

High Plains Home Tech does not perform any of the following, as they require a Colorado-licensed electrician:

Outlet and Electrical Work

  • Moving a 120V electrical outlet (even a few inches)
  • Adding new outlets
  • Replacing or relocating electrical boxes
  • Installing or extending Romex wiring
  • Altering or adding circuits
  • Working inside electrical panels

Lighting and Power

  • Installing or replacing light fixtures (120V)
  • Installing ceiling fans
  • Replacing switches or dimmers
  • Wiring for appliances or HVAC
  • Hardwiring doorbells, thermostats, or cameras that require 120V supply

Other Prohibited Work

  • Any wiring carrying over 50 volts
  • Any work requiring electrical permits
  • Any work defined by the Colorado Electrical Board as "electrical contracting"

If a project includes electrical work, we will gladly coordinate with a licensed electrician or refer you to one.

Homeowner Exception (For Private Residences Only)

Colorado homeowners are allowed to perform their own electrical work on their own primary residence with proper permits.

This exception does not apply to work performed by High Plains Home Tech or any contractor without an electrical license.
